We can predict your tank's reliability

Our comprehensive corrosion analysis will determine whether an underground tank is at high risk for catastrophic failure in the near future.

This tank has visible signs of tank corrosion

Corrosion accounts for 90% of the reported tank failures.  Photo A depicts a corroding leaking tank that was removed from the ground.  To highlight some of the corrosion spots, Photo B shows an area of rust under 10x magnification.

Corrosion Evaluation Services

We are certified to conduct both corrosion evaluations & tank testing:  Only an elite few companies in our region are trained and certified to offer both services.  An ideal inspection would include both tank testing & corrosive evaluation.  The corrosive evaluation would add an extra layer of security by predicting whether the tank is at high risk for catastrophic failure in the near future.

Low cost!  Our basic corrosion analysis can be performed in conjunction with any tank test or soil test for a nominal fee.  Each corrosion evaluation will include a separate written report describing the corrosive state of the tank.

S.T.E.P.S. Soil Testing

Our company is one of a select few firms certified to perform S.T.E.P.S. testing:  Our company and soil testing personnel have undergone extensive training and obtained  certifications by International Lubrication & Fuel Consultants (ILFC) to perform this comprehensive evaluation.  ILFC developed the S.T.E.P.S. evaluation primarily for underground tanks 1000 gallons or less.

S.T.E.P.S.  identifies oil in the ground & predicts the tank's viability:  This testing process will detect the presence of petroleum product in the ground, identify the corrosion rate of buried steel tank and determine the presence of other "factors" that accelerate corrosion.  These "factors" include the presence of sulfide reducing bacteria, extent of acidity or alkalinity of the soil and level of dissolved salts which may impact the tank's corrosion rate.

S.T.E.P.S.  soil samples are laboratory analyzed:   After our environmental technicians extract soil samples from the area surrounding the underground tank, the samples are transported to International Lubrication & Fuel Consultants (ILFC) for analysis.  ILFC issues a comprehensive report based on their laboratory findings and our field corrosion evaluation.

Tank Corrosion- Frequently Asked Questions

Why do buried steel tanks corrode?

bullet

Corrosion is caused by the inherent tendency of iron based metals in underground storage systems to revert to a stable form - known as rust.  When steel turns to rust- this is an electrochemical process which is dependent on variables that are present in the soil such as soil moisture, pH acidity, backfill material, physical location and any scratching or damage occurring during the tank's installation.

Can S.T.E.P.S. testing be performed in conjunction with tank testing ?

bullet

Our comprehensive inspection services include both tank testing and S.T.E.P.S. testing as part of one evaluation.  Follow this link to find out more information about our testing options.
